#### Biography

#### Mike has been helping students with test preparation and math since 1996, when he helped a good friend pass the New York State Regents exam in Geometry. Originally from Airmont, New York, Mike attended Cornell University where he earned an undergraduate degree in Mathematics. In 2005, Mike won a Math for America Newton Fellowship and later earned a tuition-free Master's Degree in Mathematics Education from Columbia University. He then developed and taught accelerated math curricula at The Anderson School in Manhattan, a public school for gifted children. During that time he also served on an item writing committee to develop test questions for New York State standardized mathematics tests.
Mike has tutored students for the SAT, SAT Math Level 1 and 2, ACT, SHSAT, SSAT, ISEE, Hunter Test, New York Regents Exams, NY State Exams, IB HL Maths, AP Calculus AB and BC, AP Statistics, GRE, and GMAT. In addition, Mike has tutored all levels of math K-12, essay writing, and organizational skills. He has also helped numerous NYC independent school students get admitted to honors-level math classes by prepping them for departmental placement exams. Mike achieved perfect scores on the SAT (all sections) and SAT Math subject tests and has tutored many of his students to do the same. While Mike is widely regarded as a top math tutor, he also excels at tutoring all sections of all standardized tests, including reading comprehension, science, grammar, writing/essay, and verbal.
A typical tutoring day for Mike may include helping a 2nd grader work on math enrichment problems in TriBeCa, prepping an 8th grader for the SHSAT on the Upper West Side, then finishing off the day with a few hours of AP Calculus BC with a boarding school 12th grader over Skype.
Mike instills within students the belief that with hard work they can achieve their goals. He inspires students to believe in themselves and develops long-lasting relationships built on trust and mutual respect.
When he’s not tutoring, Mike holds down a job as a mathematics content developer at a prominent educational technology firm. Through this work he has become an expert on learning progressions for K-12 mathematics, common student errors and misconceptions, and the intricacies and nuances of state and national mathematics standards. This work enables him to quickly assess student needs, trace back to fill in gaps in students' understanding, and push forward to challenge and inspire students to reach the next level.
